Prescriptions: Competition
As the annual 2002 International Military Surfing Championships approach,
I get tons of questions asking about the "level of competition".
First things first, the International Military Surfing Championships actually
has evolved from what was once just a few military surfers into what is
now billed as the only authorized international military surf contest
in the world. How this came about is another story completely but suffice
it to say, "Dis buggah gon' be one massive event bruddah".
The level of competition becomes a secondary factor in this event, which
unlike many other competitive events, mixes spirited competition with
a whole lot of fun. Additionally, with the event being run exactly like
a "Triple Crown of Surfing" professional event, military surfers
get a taste of what world class surfing professionals experience on a
day-to-day basis. Not only is this event supported by many sponsors in
the pro surfing biz such as Quiksilver and Hawaiian Tropic, surfing legends
assist in putting together the event as a way of giving our military a
big "mahalo" for all that we do in our normal jobs. We all know
that it's not easy helping preserve freedom…..even out here in this island
paradise.
This event has grown over the past 4 years from only 24 total competitors
in 2 events to 96 competitors spread out over 6 events. In the 2001 International
Military Surfing Championships surfers from as far away as Australia,
Japan, Alaska, California and the East Coast traveled to Hawaii to compete
against our "homegrown" Hawaii based surfers. I expect a huge
showing again this year and I have expanded the field to allow more competitors
to enter. One point I cannot stress enough is that anyone….active duty
(all branches of service), National Guard, reserves, retired and family
members are eligible to compete. The next point is that no one will leave
the contest empty handed. Each competitor will receive a competition t-shirt
just for being in the event. Trophies are awarded for 1st - 6th place
in each category and additional prizes donated by sponsors will be given
away and there will be a drawing to win a new surfboard.
Let no one say that the military does not offer great recreational opportunities….get
in while you can and join us for some bigtime sun, fun and surf on the
19th & 20th of January 2002 at the Waianae Army Recreation Center.
Anyone interested in competing or obtaining more information can connect
to the HMSO website at www.HMSO.org or contact the surf doctor at 438-0079
(office) or 624-0459 (evenings). Get stoked, go surfing……That's the doctor's
orders!
