TRIPLE CROWN: OK, for those of you who have been away or in hibernation over the past month, The Triple Crown of Surfing was just completed last week and boy…..was it an unreal event. The Triple Crown, which is the premiere event in professional surfing, takes place over a 5 week period right here in our back yard. This is the "SUPERBOWL" of professional surfing and tickets are free. You can come and go as you please, grab some rays and get that coveted winter tan, or just catch the results on the evening news.

The Triple Crown consists of three men's professional events (the Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa, the Rip Curl Cup at Sunset, and the Pipemasters at the Banzai Pipeline) that determine more than just who is the winner of each event, they determine who is the world champion, the Triple Crown champion and the Rookie of the Year. In addition to these three events, the Triple Crown is also the host location of the womens professional surfing championship with two female contests (the Roxy Pro on Maui and the Hawaiian Pro Women's at Haleiwa). The Bear Longboard invitational event is also held at Haleiwa during this same time period. Bottom line with this "event season"……there's a whole lot of surf action to be had each year between mid November thru mid December.

Finally, as I write this article, the Eddie Aikau Big Wave contest is being pieced together for a possible run on 26 Dec based on a projected incoming swell which will exceed the minimum contest wave size of 20 ft. The Eddie Aikau event is held as often as possible but some years the waves do not reach the proper sustained wave height to be able to run the event. The waves have allowed this event to be held two times over the past three years. This event is an "invitation only" contest and if you ever get the chance to stand on the beach and feel the ground rumble from the weight of these huge waves, you are in for a big treat. The surfers invited to compete in this event consists of a select few of the top watermen in the world. Only these selected surfers have the ability to go to war in these conditions and if you think you're that special too, maybe you should go have your thought processes evaluated. The origin of the Eddie Aikau is a story in itself so you'll have to wait for the next prescription. Until then, get out there and watch these "Men Who Ride Mountains". It's an awesome spectacle and something you'll remember forever. A HUI HO !!!
