20 January 2003-
The contest is over and it is time to reflect. Overall it was a success! We had wind and lumpy surf, but we did have surf that was ridable. We made the best of it. Thanks to Mike, it worked out great. Thanks to all of the others who made this event happen. Thanks to the sponsors, and thanks to all of the people who was there supporting us throught thick and thin.

Aloha,

The contest was a great success for the club and Turtle Bay was a beautiful venue for the event. Waianae Army Rec Center was a great place to spend a Sunday.....as always even though the wind was an issue as the day wore on. BIG THANKS to everyone who helped in the planning, helped in the execution, helped in the aftermath, participated as contestants, judges, admin personnel, donated prizes and/or services and all families who supported this event. There are several of the "usual suspects" each year and I applaud your persistence in "staying the course" with the HMSO and our contest. We
paid our dues and we finally had good waves for the event.
It has made me very happy when I have seen the smiles on everyone's faces, especially the kids, during our event each year. I have so enjoyed doing this each year and regret that I will no longer be able to perform the contest duties in future years. I will miss all who have participated, you
have all made a serious impact on my life and I am a better person for having been your friend.

I am looking for a serious person in Hawaii who wishes to conduct the contest business. Please contact me if you wish to get involved in running the event next year. This is not something that can be put together over night and if there is to be an event next year, I will need someone to begin the planning for next year. I will be here to assist until the late summer
but then I will no longer be available except via phone and email.......please do not allow this event to stall, there are many who look forward to this event and even though it is a task to put on, I have lived for the happiness this event brings to so many. I hope to remain involved behind the scenes for many years to come.
This upcoming Friday evening, at the USCG Hideaway club at Barbers Point, "JEFF MARIANO and DA BOYZ" who are the Official Band of the HMSO and the
International Military Surfing Championships will be playing and I ask that we support them. I plan to be there and anyone who wishes to meet me there for a "post contest" wrap up social gathering, I'll gladly take a few minutes to sit and talk over the good times we have had at these events over the past few years. Please let me know if you can attend.
Keep in touch and get wet.......nothing is more important than friends and surfing and the combination of these are "The Source" and we should all "Nana I Ke Kumu" (look to the source),

Mahalo,
Mike

Aloha,

I received email information from Turtle Bay....it is pasted below. I
still have a meeting scheduled with Turtle Bay on 6 July to solidify our use
of their facilities and iron out their understanding of our event schedule
which will be 3 days if all proposed events fill to capacity. Only then will
the blocked rooms be available for reservation for this event so I will
notify you. As previously stated, the resort can easily sell out their rooms
over the holiday weekend and we have been given the attached pricing as a
discount off of holiday weekend rates. Do not feel obligated to stay at this
location. Yes, it will be convenient but if you choose to find less
expensive accomodations elsewhere, that is understood by all to include the
resort management. More details as I get them.

Mahalo,
Mike

Aloha, Michael:

Mahalo for the opportunity to host this prestigious event. We look forward
to working with you in planning a successful surfing event here on Oahu's
scenic North Shore.

The Turtle Bay Resort is undergoing a $35 million dollar renovation and
enhancement project. The first phase of the renovation is completed. This
involved the redesign and repair of the main building exterior including new
lanais (balconies). Renovation of guestroom interiors and improved public
areas is scheduled for completion by January 2003. The refreshed building
exterior, combined with the renovation of our guestrooms, meeting space and
public areas will restore the resort's traditional island charm and appeal.
While the renovation is in progress, Turtle Bay Resort remains fully
operational.

As we understand, this is a two-day weekend event with one day being there
as a holding period to allow flex in the schedule due to lack of waves or to
move to an alternate site if conditions are too extreme. This is planned
over Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Specifically for the military
families, we are able to propose the following room rates:

Group Dates: January 18-21, 2002

Room Rates: $145 net

Room Block: 50 Ocean View Rooms

Method of Reservations:
Individuals will call the hotel directly.
A one-night deposit will be required to
confirm reservations.
The cut-off date for reservations will be January 5.

After the cut-off date, rooms will be at
best available rate.

Event Requirements:
You advised that a water permit will be secured from
the State of Hawaii.
An area will be designated by the hotel for an
administration tent and tables for judges.

Michael, the above block of rooms is being held on a tentative basis until
July 15. I'll call you next week to answer any questions. In the meantime,
a complete sales packet has been sent to you. Mahalo a nui.
