The HMSO Mission
The aim of the HMSO is to bring military surfers together no matter what level of surfer one might be or whatever social status one might hold in one’s daily grind as a land creature. Surfing is truly the greatest gift that God has given Mankind when it comes to sport. There is nothing like it. Nothing at all… Catch a wave and you’ll be sitting on top of the world – say the Beach Boys… And it is so true. One good wave and you are hooked for life. It will be a lifelong quest that will continually haunt your thoughts whilst daydreaming, moving papers from one side of your desk to the other, or listening to another boss make noise from that hole in the center of their face. All you will be thinking about is the ocean and how in the world you can get out into it again to ride down a glassy wall, a living work of art.
Ask yourself - what other sport allows the average guy to paddle out into the lineup next to the 8 Time World Champion (Kelly Slater) and play equally jockeying for waves that cost nothing at all to ride? You aren’t going to do that with a basketball – getting into a pick-up game with the likes of Michael Jordan anytime soon. And what sport is like surfing where people flock to watch an “empty court” with no one on it? You don’t see folks headed to the local football stadium or soccer field while no one is actually playing just to watch the sun go down over the switched off stadium lights now do you?
So that’s the bug – surfing. And you either have it now or will soon get it. Just read on… Think about the mental picture you had in your skull when you received word that you were moving to Hawaii as your next assignment. I know that the thought of surfing was one of the many great things you were entertaining as you flew into Honolulu Airport, looking down at the water prior to landing and seeing those white lines at sea on the approach end of the runway entertaining thoughts of surfing them sometime during your assignment. The smell of sea-salt and plumeria that hits you when you stumble into the lobby of the airport still isn’t enough to override the thought of the ocean. If this sounds like you, then you are truly infected with the surfing virus. Welcome to the Brotherhood!
Well, the HMSO is here to help folks make the transition from just a simple daydream to stark reality. Our collective aim as a club is to properly guide & mentor you about surfing. Showing you the ropes in relation to surfboards and direct you where to get a quality board. If you find yourself purchasing your board from the Post Exchange for example, you’ve already made your first mistake! We can turn you onto shops that won’t rip you off and show you boards that are right for you and will last for more than a few sessions and that you can actually get up and onto the wave. It really boils down to the guy or gal who is actually catching waves is no doubt, the one that is having the most fun and subsequently – the real winner in the surfing game. And just like life, there are “rules of play” for surfing that aren’t obvious. And you won’t find a sign posted at the waters edge to read before paddling out that will enlighten you and make for a better experience for not only you, but other surfers in the water also. And each break is a little different rule-wise! The last thing you want to do is paddle out and have someone from a local “tribe” teach you proper etiquette in the water should you drop-in on them!
So join the HMSO and catch a wave – you’ll be sitting on top of the world…
